Loco - foco o Congreve.
La cerilla de fricción fue inventada originalmente por el químico
inglés John Walker en 1829.
El descubrimiento fue casual y nunca se patentó, se denominaban Loco-foco, eran como palillos de dientes en cuya punta tenían un baño de azufre y superpuesto otro de clorato de potasio y sulfuro de antimonio. Se vendían en cajas de cartón con dos trozos de papel lija. Fue producido inicialmente por Richard Bell & Co. y por el fabricante de instrumentos científicos Samuel Jones, quien bautizó su producto como Lucifers. Sin embargo, Walker prefirió el nombre Congreve en referencia a Sir William Congreve, inventor del cohete.
Estos fósforos con el tiempo fueron mejorados con alcanfor y sin azufre. El azufre era un ingrediente común en las cerillas hasta entonces y tenía la evidente desventaja de emitir un olor desagradable. La caja de cartón pasó a ser de chapa de hierro con decoración y marca en relieve. Se las denominó Nuevas Luces Congreve.

The discovery was accidental and never patented. They were called Loco-Foco matches. They were similar to toothpicks with a sulfur coating on the tips, followed by a coating of potassium chlorate and antimony sulfide. They were sold in cardboard boxes with two pieces of sandpaper. They were initially produced by Richard Bell & Co. and by the scientific instrument maker Samuel Jones, who named his product Lucifers. However, Walker preferred the name Congreve in reference to Sir William Congreve, inventor of the rocket.
These matches were eventually improved with camphor and sulfur-free. Sulfur was a common ingredient in matches until then and had the obvious disadvantage of emitting an unpleasant odor. The cardboard box was made of sheet iron with embossed decoration and branding. They were called the New Congreve Lights.
